Louis Vuitton Monogram Papillon 26 Shoulder Bag

First introduced in 1966, the Louis Vuitton Papillon was designed by Henri Racamier, the son-in-law of Gaston-Louis Vuitton and husband of Louis Vuitton’s great-granddaughter, Odile Vuitton.

Named after the French word for “butterfly,” the Papillon is defined by its distinctive cylindrical body and paired handles, designed to evoke the body and wings of a butterfly. Its playful yet functional silhouette marked an important chapter in the evolution of Louis Vuitton’s Monogram canvas from traditional travel pieces into modern everyday handbags.

This vintage example is crafted from the House’s iconic Monogram coated canvas and finished with natural cowhide-leather trim. Over time, the vegetable-tanned leather has developed a rich reddish-brown patina, giving the bag the warm, distinctive character associated with well-aged vintage Louis Vuitton.

The Papillon 26 became the line’s most popular and versatile size, offering generous interior space without the bulk of the larger version. Its structured barrel shape accommodates everyday essentials while retaining a compact, polished appearance.
